Squirrels

Squirrels

The four boys
chased the female
and each other
limb to trunk to tree top
great leaps
showing off
one missed—the others
all froze, watched him fall
eighty feet through the air,
land in a fortuitous clump
of springy live oak scrub
the chase resumed—
when the female
would get too far
ahead, she’d wait—
one time, hung
upside down
by her back feet
legs spread apart
first guy there
gave her an exceedingly
tender kiss, she
reached up
kissed him back
on the mouth
and sprang away
Darling?
Yes, Squirrel.
Why do you call me that?
